April 22, 2009 is Earth Day. It is a time for reflection and also a time for action. It’s a day serving as a reminder for us to treat our planet with respect, with kindness, with consideration to protect its health, its life for our children and our future.
The planet is also symbolic of our bodies which are an amazing synergy of life that is unique to each one of us. The earth and our bodies, each with many parts and many functions which are all dependent on one another, need special care and attention.
Earth Day asks us to be good to our planet. But on this day we should stop for a moment and realize that we are a vital part of planet earth and we must treat ourselves with respect and kindness too.
- Eat Healthy
Nourishing ourselves with whole and natural foods, with fresh fruits, vegetables and whole grains is good for our health and good for our planet. Try to buy organic whenever possible. Not only are organic products better for you since they are produced without pesticides and other harmful chemicals, they are better for the environment. Plus, buying organic reduces the transportation involved with importing products, which saves money and energy.
Walking, biking or running to work instead of driving is good for our health and good for our planet. When just one person leaves his or her car home and takes their bike to work for one year, our lungs and planet are saved from 78 pounds of pollution.
- Healthy Homes
Using natural products to clean our homes instead of chemical-based solutions is good for our health and good for our planet. True clean doesn’t have a smell. When your bathroom is clean, it shouldn’t smell like pine or lemon. Switch from toxic to non-toxic, natural cleaning products. Cleaning with non-toxic products can improve your family’s health and is less likely to cause asthma attacks.
We hope on this Earth Day you’ll find the inspiration to live better and treat your body with respect and kindness. Life is precious. So is the earth. Embrace Earth Day and embrace a healthier life.
