Are you sitting down? If so, it could be hazardous to your health, according to a study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology. The study performed by the American Cancer Society reports that sitting for six hours or more per day raises your risk of death, whether or not you work out(1).
Researchers found that even if the participants exercised, women who sat six hours or more per day increased their risk of death by 37% over a 13-year period than people who sat less than three hours a day. And men who sat more than six hours per day increased their death risk by 18% over 13-years compared to men who sat less than three hours a day.(1)
Non-exercisers in the study had an even higher risk of death. The least active women in the study, who also sat for the most hours, were 94% more likely to die in 13 years than those who sat the least and exercised the most. The men who did not exercise had a 48% higher death risk.(1)
The study followed 53,440 men and 69,776 women between 1993 and 2006. Researchers said the deaths that occurred during the study were linked to heart disease more than cancer.(1)
"Prolonged time spent sitting, independent of physical activity, has been shown to have important metabolic consequences, and may influence things like triglycerides, high density lipoprotein, cholesterol, fasting plasma glucose, resting blood pressure, and leptin," American Cancer Society researcher Alpa Patel, Ph.D., said in a statement.
Health Complications from Sitting Too Much
