If you have any “silver” fillings in your mouth, you may want to make a trip to see your dentist. That’s because they may contain up to 50% Mercury which is known to cause psychological, neurological and immunological health problems.
Continuous Daily Exposure Every Time You Eat, Drink and Brush Your Teeth!
Once you get a Mercury filling, your exposure is continuous because every time you stimulate the filling by eating, chewing gum, drinking hot coffee, or even just brushing your teeth, Mercury vapors are released in your mouth. Research has shown that low levels of Mercury can alter cellular membranes and cause degeneration of developing neurological structures.
Symptoms of Mercury Poisoning
Chronic Mercury poisoning can cause a multitude of symptoms, some of which include:
- Diarrhea or constipation
- Loss of appetite
- Weight loss
- Aggressiveness or fits of anger
- Anxiety or depression
- Manic depression
- Mood swings
- Frequent headaches
- Ringing in the ears
Mercury: Higher Exposure than from Fish, Seafood, Water & Air
In 1991, the World Health Organization reported that exposure to Mercury from amalgams(silver dental fillings) is higher than from fish, seafood, water and air. For example, just one amalgam filling releases up to 15 micrograms of Mercury per day. That’s over six times the amount you’d get from eating a contaminated fish, which contains about 2.3 micrograms. Since the average person has not one, but 8 amalgam fillings, the level of Mercury exposure increases exponentially to as much as 120 micrograms per day—over 50 times the exposure per day than you would get from eating a tainted fish.
Since 1859, the American Dental Association (ADA) has supported the use of Mercury fillings(amalgams) despite many studies that have found Mercury to be unsafe. It’s estimated that 75% of Americans with amalgam fillings are unaware that their fillings contain Mercury, and most are unaware of the possible health implications.
Today, Mercury amalgams are still the most commonly used dental filling material in the world with approximately 100 million amalgam fillings done each year.
The Fight Against Mercury Fillings
Fortunately, things are changing due to the efforts of advocate groups like Consumers for Dental Choice and World Alliance for Mercury-Free Dentistry. In fact, more than half of dentists today use fillings that are Mercury free.
Make sure to ask your dentist if they are Mercury free. If they aren’t, find another dentist.
