Vitamin D was once thought to be primarily involved in bone development. However, a growing body of research suggests that it’s vital in multiple different bodily functions, including allowing body cells to utilize calcium (which is essential for cell metabolism), muscle fibers to develop and grow normally, and the immune system to function properly. Why We’re Deficient

Few Foods Contain Enough Vitamin D

Small amounts of vitamin D are found in beef liver, cheese, and egg yolks. For the most part, fortified foods provide most of the vitamin D in the American diet.
Experts Call for Higher Doses
A number of experts, including those from the Harvard School of Public Health, have urged the government to raise its recommended daily amount of vitamin D.
The daily recommended dosage (RDA) of Vitamin D is set at 400 IUs (international units). This level of Vitamin D is considered by many experts to be the absolute minimum the body needs in order to avoid health problems. Most experts anticipate that this allowance will be revised.
In an editorial in the March 2007 edition of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, a prominent group of researchers wrote, “The balance of the evidence leads to the conclusion that the public health is best served by a recommendation of higher daily intakes of Vitamin D.
A lecture in Houston presented by Dr. Abbas Qutab in September, 2007 stated, “The overall general recommendation for Vitamin D supplementation should be 4000 IUs/day.”
Most supplements are not adequate
