It is probably part of your morning routine – you wake up in the morning and pour yourself a refreshing glass of juice. If you’re like most Americans, the juice in your fridge is most likely Orange Juice. But did you know that you there are several more nutritional options you should be pouring in to your glass?
Researchers from the University of California, Los Angeles have ranked the top 5 fruit juices according to their antioxidant levels.
The Top 5
- Pomegranate Juice
Pomegranate won as the top rated juice in all categories. It is the healthiest of all, because it contains the most of every type of antioxidant. It may protect against some cancers, such as prostate cancer. It might also modify heart disease risk factors and could be healthy for your heart.
- Concord Grape Juice
Concord grape juice is a good source of very potent antioxidants. Research also indicates that it may be good for our hearts and help reduce blood pressure. Grapes are also a good source of fiber.
- Blueberry Juice
Blueberry juice contains lots of antioxidants and is also a good source of fiber and vitamin C. There is also some indication that blueberries may have some effect on age-related cognitive abilities.
- Black Cherry Juice
Black cherry juice is not only high in antioxidants; there is also new evidence that it can diminish excercised-induced muscle injuries.
- Cranberry Juice
Cranberry juice is also high in antioxidants and is a good source of vitamin C. And there is evidence that it can decrease the incidence of yeast infections by preventing bacteria from sticking to the bladder wall.
As a general rule, any fruit with a vivid color, like most berries, will be high in antioxidants, so it’s no surprise berry juices landed in all of the Top 5 slots.
Please keep in mind that no juice will ever match the nutritional punch of eating whole fruits which are higher in fiber and antioxidants and lower in calories than juice. So if you have the extra time in the morning, cut up some fresh fruit or grab an apple or handful of grapes instead!
